UK Cancer Genetics Group Statement on Galleri trials in the NHS
The UKCGG notes the announcements in the British media today regarding a trial of Galleri – a blood test to screen for cancer (using a scientific technique detecting cell free circulating tumour DNA). We understand that many of our patients who carry genetic changes which significantly increase their cancer risk will be interested in these developments. We strongly welcome all research which aims to increase early cancer diagnoses. However, we note the preliminary nature of this work; that the Galleri test is not currently ready for routine implementation in the NHS and more work needs to be undertaken to show meaningful clinical benefit before this happens. We very much look forward to the publication of the results of such trials in the scientific literature and to support future evidence based measures to improve screening for cancer, and their robust implementation into clinical pathways.
